6 Reasons You Should Have a 5 O’Clock Rule

Unofficial reason: To experience sunrises like this.
  1. You can be selfish at 5:00 a.m.
    • It’s crazy… you’d be surprised how rarely your husband needs something from you at 5:00 a.m., or how few people are expecting email responses. I don’t have kids, but I’m assuming your 4 year old daughter isn’t asking you to braid her hair at that hour.
    • It’s rare that you’re needed at 5:00 a.m. Distractions are minimal. You can do your thang.
  2. It is the ONE constant of your day.
    • The most consistent and organized time in my life is between 4:45 a.m. & 7:30 a.m. Who knows what else the day will throw at me? I know for sure what each morning will look like:
      • 1. Workout
      • 2. Quiet time & coffee
      • 3. Work on Macy McNeely Wellness (Client plans, research, brainstorming, blogging.)
  3. You’ll be in bed earlier.
    • Why is this a good thing? Because you won’t do anything stupid like eat an entire pint of Halo Top Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. (Note to self: QUIT BUYING THAT STUFF.)
  4. Sets the tone for your day.
    • Let’s be honest: a rushed brain = a scattered brain. Enough said.
  5. “I’m a night owl,” they say.
    • A night owl, huh? That’s valid. I still think you’re missing out. This is why:
      • Willpower is a depletable resource and favors the morning.
        • Imagine this: you fight back the urge to eat those Snickers in the break room all day long. You resist! PARTAY! You come home to a dishwasher that needs to be unloaded, laundry to put away and a floor to mop. Chances are, your willpower tank is on empty and you are going to put that booty on the couch and veg. And let’s be real, you’re DEFINITELY not going workout either.
        • Now, reverse the scenario. You give in and crush the Snickers (awe, man). However, your willpower tank might be halfway full, depending on the day you’ve had. You might have some left to get those chores done.
        • Essentially, we have one supply of will and discipline, and it is depleted with any act of conscious self-regulation – whether that is resisting a cookie, doing a puzzle or doing anything else that requires effort.
  1. Progress is 100% guaranteed.
    • Think about it…. if you give your self 5-7 more hours a week to work on whatever you want, fitness related or not, progress will happen. It’s inevitable.

We all have commitments we have to keep. In one form or another, we have loved ones with expectations that should be met. We also have goals and dreams that need attention. To start, be selfish at 5:00 a.m. Use the most willpower available for YOU and your personal growth.
